Faith in Action – November 6, 2024
Building community:
Community Connection Group – Thank you to those who have stepped up to form this committee! We wish you much success!
Southwinds! – In case you missed it, our last edition of the Southwinds can be found by clicking here: http://www.windsorparkunitedchurch.com/southwinds-fall-2024-edition/
Technology issues at WPUC – We have been having some frustrating issues with our technology at WPUC, especially our bulk congregational email. You may have noticed that you received fewer emails from the church office for a couple of weeks. Hopefully you are now getting our emails – we are currently working on a solution so that you are able to receive the e-blast, livestream link, etc. in a timely manner.
While emails from our website have not had the same problem, we have noticed that you are receiving the entire post in the email (usually it says “click here to read more” and when you click you automatically go to our website). The only problem with this is that the email does not include all of the videos/pictures. To get the complete post, go to the top of the email where it says “read on blog” and click. This will take you to our website, where you can see the videos and also see coming events, etc.
For those watching the livestream, we are also having a few glitches here. The livestream has been quite jittery and hard to follow. Our current solution is to put a recording of the service on our YouTube channel that is of better quality at a later point on Sunday afternoon. This is also the video that is included in the “Worship Service” post/email. The video can also be found by visiting our website (usually after 3 p.m. on Sunday).
Thank you for your patience as we sort these issues out!
Taking Care of Each Other – It’s that time of year again! We ask that you do not come to the church if you are feeling under the weather. All of our worship services can be viewed under the Worship tab above, or by visiting our YouTube channel! *Also, COVID and flu vaccines are now available at your nearby pharmacy and WPUC is mask-friendly!
WPUC Pictorial Directory – The church directory has always been a great way for the WPUC family to get to know each other. Forget a name – look in the directory! Know the name, but not the face – look in the directory! It’s also a valuable tool for anyone new coming into the church (like a new minister!). Please spread the word to those who do not use technology.
Call the office to make an appointment for your photo to be taken – there are still openings on Sunday, Nov. 10 and we are willing to take walk-ins if there is time between appointments.
Remembrance Day Sunday service – Last call for photos! This year, as part of our Remembrance service on November 10, we will be having a slide show of people who served in the military who are connected to the people of Windsor Park United Church. If you find a photo to include in the slide show, please send it to laura.wpuc@gmail.com with a description of the person, their role, how they are related to you and anything else you’d like to share with us! The deadline to submit photos is TODAY – Wednesday, November 6. Thank you to those who have already submitted photos!
*You will also have the opportunity to share artifacts in a display on Sunday, November 10. Please bring your items to the church by Thursday, November 7 during office hours or on Sunday, November 10 before 10 a.m.
Soup Sunday is back! It’s that time of year again! Join us in the North room after service on Sunday, Nov. 10th for a last minute soup lunch! No tickets necessary just have your $10.00 ready at the door for a bowl of delicious soup, bun, coffee or tea and dessert! And – if you can email the church at office@windsorparkunitedchurch.com sometime throughout the week so Maxine Pattle has a rough idea of numbers, that would be fabulous!
Sing with the Worship Choir for Advent! – The Worship Choir will start practicing music for Advent/Christmas on Thursday, Nov. 21. Practices are on Thursdays from 7:45-9:15 p.m. Get in the spirit with a short-term commitment! We’d love to sing with you!
Greeters – If you would like to be one of our friendly greeters on Sunday mornings, please speak to Alana Davis or call the church office. Your friendly smile is the first thing people see as they come in the door and your welcome makes a big difference to new-comers, returning folk and regular members!
Offering Counters – As we move into the winter season, we are in need of a healthy complement of offering counters. This work involves staying after church on Sunday to tally the givings from the offering plates. All training is provided. Offering counters work in pairs and sign up for the weeks that are convenient for their schedules. Add your name to the sign-up sheet or leave a message at the church office if you are interested in helping out!
Cleaning House – As we move through this time of transition, there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes tidying going on! Currently, we have a ping pong table that we would like to find a new home for. The table comes with 4 paddles and net. If you know of anyone who could use it, please call the church office. For a donation, this can be yours!
Coffee makers and clean-up crews – Sign up sheets for after-church coffee are up near the office. Please sign up at least a week in advance. Even if you aren’t officially “on coffee,” you are welcome to bring goodies to share, or help with the clean up!
Thinking of You Baskets – The Pastoral Care Committee is planning to once again distribute “Thinking of You” baskets to our members who have had a challenging time recently. We plan to package the treats on December 1st after the Sunday service and would appreciate any donations before then. Items might include hard candies, chocolates, lotions, soaps, body wash etc. in small sizes. Items can be left at the church during office hours or at Sunday services. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
Pastoral Care Group – If you are aware of anyone from our church community who might benefit from Pastoral Care support, you can speak with Sue Turley (office@windsorparkunitedchurch.com or 204-256-8792) to share discreetly. If you have some time in your schedule to connect with a shut-in or hospitalized individual from our church community by phone or in person, please reach out to Pat Lumsden (lumsdenpa@mymts.net or 204- 254-6301) for more information.
Book Sale – Our book sale continues to be a popular “small but mighty” fund raiser! Thanks for your support and special thanks to those folks who set up and take down the book display!
Homecoming Sunday – It was great to see over 60 people at our Homecoming Sunday service on October 27 and so nice to get a chance to connect or re-connect!
October Food Collection – Thank you for your donations in support of World Food Day during the month of October. The donations have been shared between our WPUC Emergency Food Cupboard and West Broadway Community Ministry.
Save the dates!
Craft Sale –
The Craft Sale will be on Saturday, November 30 from
10 a.m-3 p.m.! For tables or information, please contact Jan at 204-792-5798 or jannazarko@gmail.com
Cookie Walk – The Cookie Walk will be on Saturday, December 7 from 10-11:30 a.m. Come out and fill a box for $15. Also, it’s time to start baking. This event is only a success due to the amazing cookies that are baked and donated! Sign-up sheets for cookie donations and volunteering during the event are in the lobby at the church.
Beyond Our Walls…
Emergency Food Cupboard – WPUC’s Emergency Food Cupboard is in need. We have had a number of visitors to our cupboard and more are needing every day. Items needed include peanut butter, instant coffee, crackers, cereal, pasta, pasta sauces, items that children can take to school for snacks, juice boxes, tuna, beans, muffin mixes, canned fruits and vegetables. Cat and dog food are also appreciated as some using our services have four-footed family members. You are welcome to drop off donations during office hours or on Sunday mornings. Please leave donations on the counter in the upstairs kitchen.
Support for West Broadway Community Ministry
“THANK YOU” for your ongoing support in bringing in cookies for WBCM! If you are donating cookies for this month’s lunch, please label the package “FOR WEST BROADWAY” and bring your donation to the church during office hours by Monday, November 18. Homemade cookies are always a hit and any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!
Request for Pill Bottles – Once again, we will be collecting empty pill bottles to support two ongoing projects in the city. If you have any bottles to contribute, please ensure that these are clean and that all labeling has been removed. You can place the pill bottles in the Outreach Bin which is located between the two sets of doors at the church entrance during regular office hours or on Sunday mornings. Some of the bottles are directed to a group of volunteers who fill those with shampoo for distribution to homeless members of our community. Other bottles are shared with the veterinary team at the Winnipeg Humane Society for dispensing medication to animals in their care. Thank-you for any donations you are able to make.
